Rita
Rita is a young mother, who at 17 got pregnant and had to drop out of school. She has sickle cell anemia, a debilitating genetic disease, in which red blood cels form a sickle shape and fail to carry oxygen when blood PH becomes acidic. Between 8,000-20,000 children are born with sickle cell disease every year in Uganda and 80% of them don't survive past 5 years old.
Sickle cell anemia has been around as long as man and malaria have. Carrying the trait for sickle cell gives a survival advantage against malaria, which is particularly dangerous in pregnancy both to mother and the developing baby. Rita's hemoglobin levels, a measure of red blood cells, were dangerously low during her pregnancy. Despite trying for weeks to get Rita transfused, there was no blood available for her.
During this time, Soft Power Health supported her with counseling and medical care, helping to keep her well. Miraculously, in March, Rita delivered a healthy baby girl. After the birth of her daughter, Rita wanted to find a way to continue her education and enrolled in vocational training for tailoring and computer science. Rita has worked hard to learn new skills, so she can support herself and her daughter in the future.
