Inner City Kids Kayak Camp
After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, Dr. Jessie Stone was motivated to get underserved youth into kayaking. She started the Inner City Kids Kayaking Camp in 2002, teaching inner city youth from New York City to whitewater kayak. With the help of a number of dedicated instructors over 300 kids have learned to paddle and been able to explore a whole new world both in and around the urban jungle.
In 2021, we started a new partnership with Green Chimneys School in Brewster, NY thanks to the help of Sean Coffey a dedicated teacher and paddler who works with us each year to do the camp. We teach teenagers to whitewater kayak beginning in a swimming pool and progressing to whitewater rivers nearby.
Through kayaking, the kids are challenged in a fun and safe environment to develop new skill sets and try things they may not have thought themselves capable of doing. Every year a new group of students face fears and accept challenges in a safe and supportive environment in nature. Together, students and teachers have fun while building memories!
