We encourage short and long-term volunteers. All volunteers are given the opportunity to work with our staff in the field at our outreach programs. Volunteers with medical training are allowed to assist staff in the SPH clinic with patients. We welcome all volunteers, however if you are under 18, you must be accompanied by an adult during your time with SPH.
As a volunteer it is crucial you understand the importance of always adhering to SPH’s guidelines and rules pertaining to medical practice and social interaction with the communities we serve. We ask that you come ready to work with the communities, but not give them anything of value during your volunteer experience. You must be flexible, ready to get dirty, and be able to adapt to Ugandan time!
You will be responsible for all your expenses, in addition to a $200 USD weekly donation to Soft Power Health to help cover transportation costs and clinic meals during your stay in Uganda. Bring US bills dated 2015 or later. Bills $50 and above receive a better exchange rate.
Women and men must dress in a culturally appropriate manner covering their legs completely – either wearing skirts or long pants.
Protection from sun and rain are a must. Footwear for mud and dust is very helpful. Do not bring any items you are concerned about getting stolen, lost or broken. We have a strict transportation policy for all SPH volunteers. Use of boda bodas, matatus, or buses when volunteering with SPH is prohibited. Private cars with our known and trusted drivers are permitted.
Please email Dr. Jessie or Hannah with any questions. We look forward to working with you.
