Malaria Education and Prevention Program
Soft Power Health’s first program, the Malaria Education and Prevention Program, started in 2004. The program provides basic education about malaria transmission, prevention of disease, treatment, as well as the sale of subsidized insecticide-treated mosquito nets.
Malaria is the leading cause of death for pregnant women and children under the age of five in Uganda. Treatment is a major expense and reason people miss work, contributing to keeping Ugandans in a cycle of poverty.
A tropical, equatorial country, with rainfall throughout much of the year, Uganda is a perfect environment for malaria. It is a year-round rather than seasonal illness transmitted by the female anopheles mosquito who bites exclusively at nighttime.
Sleeping under an insecticide-treated mosquito net can reduce episodes of malaria by 50-90%. These nets can protect Ugandans from illness and death, saving them money and helping them lead more productive lives. To date Soft Power Health has sold more than 100,000 mosquito nets.
